GCTC to Offer Saturday Physics Class Aimed at Pre-Med, AP, and Weekend Students

Covington, KY - Gateway Community and Technical College will offer a five-credit-hour general physics class, PHY 211, on Saturdays this fall. This is the first time GCTC has offered this versatile class on weekends.

"PHY 211 is a general course covering the mechanics of solids, liquids and gases; heat; and sound," said Dr. George Mathew, associate professor of mathematics and physics and course instructor. "This class would be of particular interest to advanced placement high school students who want to earn college credit while still in high school, pre-med students preparing for the Medical College Admissions Test, or students from other colleges interested in picking up a Saturday science class with a lab."

The five-credit-hour course requires a working knowledge of algebra and basic trigonometry such as that obtained in MT 150 and MT 155 or an ACT math score of at least 25.

Dr. Mathew, who received his doctoral degree from the University of Kentucky, specializes in teaching techniques that make complex subjects fun and simpler to learn. He is the author of the children's science book, How the World Works, available free at cutescience.com and the No. 1 searched children's science book on Google. He is the co-author of Mechanics, a college textbook published by Brook's Cole Publishers and adopted by such colleges as the Ohio State University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of California system. His animation won a Best of the Web award from National Science Teachers Association.

With 14 years of experience teaching at the college and university level, Dr. Mathew has been nominated as best teacher on four separate occasions while teaching at the University of Kentucky, Indiana University East and Gateway Community and Technical College. He has presented twice by invitation at joint meetings of the Two Year College Physics Teachers and the American Association of Physics Teachers.

PHY 211 will be offered on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the fall 2009 semester beginning Aug. 17. For enrollment information, contact the college's Admissions Office at (859) 442-1134 or contact Dr. Mathew at george.mathew@kctcs.edu.
