Governor's Minority Students College Preparation Program, WKCTC Participate in The University of Kentucky Engineering Day

On Saturday February 21, 2009, students from all over Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois attended the Engineering Day Open House, hosted by the University of Kentucky Extended Campus which is located on the campus of West Kentucky Community and Technical College. Included in the group were students from the Governor's Minority Students College Preparation Program.

This annual event is targeted to elementary, middle and high school students and attempts to build enthusiasm in the field of engineering.  Students participated in several contests that were designed to help build an understanding of what engineers do.  Favorites among our students were the Duct Tape Challenge, Girls in Engineering-Making Lip gloss, The Edible Car, Engineering Ice Cream, and the Two-Liter Bottle Rocket Contest.

According to the University of Kentucky all of the activities were designed to reach out to current and future generations of engineering talent.

The students really had a fun time "learning". They understood the process for making lip gloss in a non- threatening way. Programs such as the UK Engineering Day Open House helps students understand how they apply engineering in their everyday lives. For example, a cake requires several ingredients to be made, and people must apply a specific process (formula) in making the cake for the cake to turn out right.  The making of a cake is a chemical engineering process.
