'Recent Works' Exhibit on Display at HCC

Hopkinsville, Ky. (February 3, 2009) - "Recent Works," a collection of photographs by Clarksville Friends of Photography, will be on display in the Hopkinsville Community College Auditorium Gallery through February 27.  The exhibit includes 43 photographs created by 13 photographers who present their work in black and white, sepia-tone silver, selenium-tone, silver gelatin, solar, litho, watercolor and color.

Friends of Photography will host a reception honoring the photographers at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8.  The reception is open to the public and will give visitors a chance to meet the photographers and discuss their work.

Friends of Photography formed in the late 1990s when a small group of photo enthusiasts met in a photography class at Austin Peay State University. When the class ended, the students continued meeting informally to engage in photography-related activities including slide presentations, discussions, hand coloring, and Polaroid Transfers, and socially-oriented activities like backyard grilling and field trips.

Today there are 28 members with a board of elected officers and a schedule of monthly meetings. The membership, comprised of professional and amateur photographers, draws from various backgrounds and professions, and includes teachers, college students and recent college graduates; newspaper professionals; writers and poets; working artists; web designers; and medical, insurance, marketing and legal professionals.

As in its beginning, the group maintains ties to APSU.  Members of the group include APSU alumni and current students. In the fall of 2001, Friends of Photography established an annual scholarship to be awarded to an APSU photography student. Scholarship funds are raised through membership dues and a portion of the sales proceeds from group exhibits. The scholarship was recently renamed the Carlos Brewer Memorial Scholarship in honor the late Dr. Carlos Brewer, who was a member of the group.
