Local Attorney, Grover Arnett, Endows Scholarship in Memory of His Parents

PRESTONSBURG, KY  -- Salyersville attorney, Grover Arnett, recently endowed a $10,000 scholarship for students at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC).  The William O. and Easter Arnett Endowed Scholarship Fund will be available for students who demonstrate the potential for achieving academic excellence, have need of financial assistance, are not receiving other financial aid, preferably reside in Magoffin County and are single parents.  Students will apply for the scholarship at BSCTC and the scholarships will be awarded by the BSCTC Scholarship Committee.

Grover Arnett, a member of the Big Sandy College Educational Foundation, Inc., has had a lifelong love of learning instilled in him by the examples of his parents, William O. and Easter Arnett.  He credits his parents with giving him the desire to give back to the community where he grew up.  Among his many affiliations he serves on the Board of Trustees of the College of the Ozarks and the Kentucky Future Leadership Foundation.  He served at Magoffin County Attorney from 1994-1999.  Recently Arnett was appointed by Kentucky's Governor to Kentucky's Worker's Compensation Nominating Commission (WCNC).  He was subsequently elected chairman of the Commission in April 2008.  The WCNC Nominates the administrative law judges for the Worker's Compensation System of Kentucky.

Arnett said, "I want to help others to achieve their goals through education.  I know how hard it is for some of the people in eastern Kentucky to get an education.  I grew up here and now serve this community as an attorney.   I want to be part of the solution to those problems by making it a little easier financially for students to go to school."

More than 85% of the students attending BSCTC have financial need.  Scholarships are awarded each year through endowments and scholarship funds set up by people like Grover Arnett who have a desire to help students succeed.  The donor list at BSCTC is made up of men and women who know the value of education and the return on their investment in the community. They know that a person who attains a college education will be better prepared to earn a living wage for themselves and their families.  They will be more likely to be employed, pay taxes, and spend their earnings in the community they live in.  The example they set for their families will make lasting impressions and their children and grandchildren will more likely follow their lead.  Thus the scholarship dollar they invest will return positive results for generations to come.

Dr. George D. Edwards, President of BSCTC, said, "In these times of budget cuts and rising costs, people like Grover Arnett make a bigger impact on the future of our students than ever before.  Students who may otherwise be unable to go to college can still have that opportunity because someone like Grover cares enough to help."

Persons wishing to become a scholarship donor can contact Jean Dorton at BSCTC (606-889-4899).  Donations are tax deductible and can make a big difference in the life of a student, their family and the community as a whole.  Donors can have the satisfaction of knowing they gave back to the community they call home.
