LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 27, 2003) - Students from Southeast Community College and West Kentucky Community and Technical College will represent their peers on the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) Board of Regents during the 2003/04 academic year.His fellow students elected Brandon W. Robinson of Southeast as community college student regent. He replaces Ida N. Tompkins of Madisonville Community College.Also, Donna J. Bartlett of West Kentucky Community and Technical College was elected as technical college student regent for 2003/04. She is currently filling an unexpired term to complete the 2002/03 academic year.The 14-member Board of Regents establishes policy for Kentucky’s statewide system of two-year community and technical colleges. The student regents will begin their 2003/04 terms after July 1.Cynthia L. Read, chair of the KCTCS Board of Regents, said she looks forward to the new regents’ service on the board. “Mr. Robinson and Ms. Bartlett come to the board with a variety of experiences,” Read said. “We will benefit from their participation.”Robinson is a full-time student at Southeast’s Cumberland Campus, majoring in broadcasting and science. Upon completion of his associate in arts degree, he plans to transfer to Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee to work on a bachelor’s degree.Robinson is co-editor of the student newspaper, The Southeasterner. He also serves as Student Government Association president for the Cumberland Campus. He has served as student representative on the college’s Board of Directors and as weather data coordinator and chief weathercaster for SECC-TV.Robinson said he will communicate with fellow students by email to discuss issues, and will keep informed by visiting student government associations at the colleges.“KCTCS has as its goal becoming the best community and technical college system in the nation,” he said. “I would like to help our system reach that goal, because the better our system becomes, the better students will be served.”Bartlett, who is originally from Indiana, worked for 10 years as a graphic artist for a school system. She has been involved in numerous volunteer activities in church, school and community.A non-traditional student, she enrolled at Paducah Community College to take a web design class. “This sparked my interest in expanding my knowledge, skills and abilities to include multimedia,” Bartlett said. \She has continued her education at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, where she is a full-time student and carries a 4.0 GPA in her second semester. \She said of her service as student regent: “I will strive to let students know that their concerns do matter and that education is a very important key in their quality of life.”
