KCTCS honors faculty, staff from Elizabethtown, NKY

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 22, 2003) – A faculty member who teaches business courses in Elizabethtown and a leader of economic development initiatives in Northern Kentucky have received recognition as top faculty and staff members in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).

At the KCTCS New Horizons Faculty Development Conference, the statewide system of two-year colleges bestowed Awards of Excellence upon:

n Lisa Cantrell, associate professor of Business Technology in the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College District.

n Angie Taylor, vice president of community and economic development for Gateway Community and Technical College in Northern Kentucky.

Cantrell and Taylor were among 16 faculty members and 16 staff members who received awards for being exemplary employees. Each of those 32 honorees was chosen by his or her college or district.

Members of the KCTCS President’s Leadership Seminar – a class that has experienced the System’s primary professional development experience – chose Cantrell and Taylor from their peers to receive the Awards of Excellence.

“Dr. Taylor and Ms. Cantrell are receiving recognition through our New Horizons initiative, which focuses on building an internal organization that promotes quality and excellence through faculty/staff involvement,” said Michael B. McCall, KCTCS president.

“Through this program, KCTCS is continuing its tradition of supporting and showcasing the innovative ideas abundant in the colleges.”

Taylor and Cantrell accepted their awards earlier this week at the KCTCS New Horizons conference. Each also received a check for $1,000 from the KCTCS Foundation Inc. Here is a description of their work:

n Taylor provides leadership over workforce training and economic development programs at Gateway. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and School Health from Eastern Kentucky University, her master’s in Counseling and Personnel Services at the University of Missouri, and her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Cincinnati

In 2002, Taylor completed the Leadership Kentucky program and was named a Northern Kentucky Woman of the Year.  Taylor also serves on the Women’s Studies faculty at Northern Kentucky University.

"It's an honor to be selected for this award by KCTCS, and it’s an honor to be of service to KCTCS and Gateway Community and Technical College,” Taylor said. “I have a great opportunity to work with a fabulous group of people.”

Gateway President G. Edward Hughes called Taylor a visionary leader who not only can conceive the plan but can execute it as well.

“Angie Taylor is the consummate professional in the KCTCS system,” Hughes said. “Her work epitomizes what KCTCS and Gateway are trying to do – create a very flexible, innovative system that can meet needs the needs of business and industry.”

n Cantrell has taught at Elizabethtown Technical College for 16 years. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Morehead State University in Business Administration and in Education and graduated magna cum laude. Cantrell is pursuing certification in Psychology and Sociology from Western Kentucky University.

In March 2001 she received the Omni Ovation Outstanding Teacher Award. Cantrell is currently serving as a KCTCS Technical College Senator, co-chair of the Executive Council at the college, and director of Elizabethtown College Lion’s Club.

“I couldn't believe I won this prestigious award -- I thought, ‘Surely not me,’ ” Cantrell said. “What excites me about teaching at Elizabethtown Technical College is seeing my students succeed and get jobs in the workplace.”

Thelma White, chief executive officer in the Elizabethtown district, said Cantrell exemplifies excellence.

“She has done an outstanding job, so this recognition is very deserved,” White said. “I applaud Lisa and congratulate her. We are very proud of her.”
