Allen Rose accepts newly created post  leading education/workforce development partnership

May 19, 2003 -  After six years of overseeing workforce development for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Cabinet Secretary Allen Rose has accepted a position leading a new and unique partnership between Jefferson Community & Technical College District and The Sullivan University System. In his new role, Rose will work as a liaison between the institutions and area business and industry, exploring and developing workforce training opportunities.

The goal of the partnership is to provide residents with the education and skills necessary for the jobs of existing and potential industry in the area. Creation of the partnership is a direct response to regional concerns that the Louisville area lacks a workforce that can meet industry’s new high skill, high-tech demands.

Both Sullivan and Jefferson provide high-tech and skills training that allow students to accept jobs immediately in healthcare, IT, manufacturing and other growing industries. Both institutions also work with area business and industry to create specific training programs for employees.

Rose will be instrumental in creating proposals for both business and industry and the higher education institutions.

“The position with the new partnership is an opportunity that will allow me to still be involved in technical education, adult education and training and employment,” he said, “and it is an opportunity I can’t pass up.”

Rose’s last day with state government is May 21; he will begin his new position Aug. 1. He will have offices at both Sullivan and Jefferson.

He has more than 32 years of business and workforce service experience.

“The new Louisville-Jefferson County Metro needs all of the area’s institutions to stand up tall to assist in meeting its long-term educational and workforce training needs and to stop the reported “brain drain,” said Dr. A.R. Sullivan, president of Sullivan University and The Sullivan University System, which includes Spencerian College and Louisville Technical Institute.

“The institutions in this partnership together form the largest resource for highly trained employees in fields that make a difference in this community’s long-term growth. We at Sullivan are excited to be working with Dr. Newberry and Dr. Rose to make this a positive force for this community.”

More than 20,000 students are enrolled annually in programs at Jefferson Community College, Jefferson Technical College, and the institutions in the Sullivan University System. Many of those programs are focused on technology and healthcare, two of the Louisville area’s most pressing workforce needs.

The unique partnership between a private university system and a public community college recognizes the need to use joint resources to maximize the services available for business, government and industry.

“We have the ability to meet the educational and training needs of existing and emerging industry,” said Dr. Tony Newberry, president and CEO, Jefferson Community & Technical College District. “And our goal is to be a strategic workforce partner with this community. Our partnership with The Sullivan University System, and the leadership of Allen Rose, brings that vital business-education link one step closer.”
